Modernising Parking Guidance Systems: JVES & Power DOT Data’s Next-Generation PGS Upgrades

Parking environments are evolving rapidly. As facilities become larger, busier, and more complex, traditional Parking Guidance Systems (PGS) can struggle to meet modern operational and customer expectations. Recognising this challenge, Joint Venture Electronic Services (JVES) and Power DOT Data (PDD) have partnered to revitalise and future-proof existing Parking Guidance Systems — without the cost and disruption of a complete replacement.

Who We Are: A Proven Partnership

Power DOT Data (PDD) is a technology company specialising in IT, IoT solutions, and managed services. Our focus is simple: build and maintain systems that solve real operational problems, streamline processes, and allow organisations to concentrate on what matters most.

JVES developed a locally produced Diamond PGS Parking Guidance System that has been deployed across South Africa and internationally. In 2022, following the loss of one of their key installers and with several systems impacted by limited maintenance during the COVID period, JVES approached PDD for assistance with one of their flagship installations at a major financial institution.

PDD assessed, restored, and stabilised the system — bringing it back to full operational condition. Since then, we have continued maintaining the PGS and, together with JVES, have begun developing a series of strategic upgrades designed to extend the Diamond PGS system’s lifespan and unlock entirely new capabilities.

From Past to Future: The Evolution of the JVES PGS

JVES Ultrasonic Parking Sensor

  • Past: JV Electronic Services supplied and installed the original Parking Guidance System.
  • Present: Power DOT Data supplies maintenance with JVES providing spare parts, and technical expertise.
  • Future: PDD and JVES are jointly developing technology upgrades that leverage modern hardware, wireless communications, and advanced software — all while keeping the existing infrastructure intact.

This approach provides clients with a clear upgrade path that reduces risk, cost, and downtime.

Smarter, More Visible Digital Displays

One of the most noticeable improvements comes in the form of upgraded digital displays:

  • Full-colour displays replace the traditional amber-only indicators.
  • Animated arrows and chevrons improve clarity and driver guidance.
  • Adjustable brightness ensures visibility across different lighting conditions.
  • A smaller physical footprint with unchanged digit size modernises the look without sacrificing readability.
  • Wireless RF technology allows displays to be installed more flexibly, removing cabling constraints.

These enhancements significantly improve driver experience and reduce confusion in high-traffic zones.

Enhanced Directional, Entrance, and Exit Signage

Static signage is no longer enough for modern parking facilities. The upgraded system introduces:

  • Brighter, animated directional signage for improved visibility in low-light areas.
  • Repositioned signage layouts to clearly reinforce traffic flow.
  • Intelligent entrance and informational signage that adapts based on real-time bay availability.
  • Colour-changing digits that signal capacity levels — shifting to red as a level approaches full occupancy.
  • Improved guidance directing drivers to lower levels when upper levels are near capacity.

The result is smoother traffic flow, reduced congestion, and quicker parking for end users.

A Powerful New Control and Reporting Platform

Behind the scenes, the PGS control and reporting system has been modernised to support operational insight and long-term planning:

  • Historical data storage enables trend analysis and future AI-driven insights.
  • A “single pane of glass” dashboard provides at-a-glance system visibility.
  • Automated reporting reduces manual effort and improves data reliability.
  • Enhanced data accuracy and advanced querying capabilities.
  • Integration readiness with third-party applications and platforms.
  • Reduced maintenance risk through documented processes and structured system governance.

Unlocking New Business Value

The upgraded software platform also opens the door to optional add-ons that align with modern parking demands:

  • Mobile application access for parking bay bookings.
  • EV charging bay reservation functionality.
  • VIP or premium parking bay allocation.
  • Seamless integration with existing websites or public information displays.

These features transform the PGS from a guidance tool into a strategic asset that supports customer experience, sustainability goals, and revenue models.

Continual Service Improvement — Built In

Once the PGS is upgraded to the new platform, it enters a defined Continual Service Improvement (CSI) cycle as part of ongoing maintenance:

  • Feature requests and enhancements are reviewed for impact and feasibility.
  • Measurable targets are defined before implementation begins.
  • Post-deployment evaluations refine each enhancement.
  • The cycle repeats for the lifespan of the system, ensuring relevance and longevity.

This structured approach ensures the PGS continues to evolve alongside client needs and emerging technologies.
